First of all, there are no big research studies out there that show a specific diet that controls or cures psoriasis. This doesn’t mean that one doesn’t exist for you, but for the bulk of those with psoriasis, different diets will work for each one and no specific diet works for everyone. Doctors generally then recommend that psoriasis sufferers eat a balanced diet, low in sweets and low in fats. It should contain a lot of vegetables and fruits and should be accompanied by a regular exercise routine.

Even so, there are specific personal experiences with diet and psoriasis that you shouldn’t ignore. If you notice that tomatoes make your psoriasis worse, then avoid tomatoes. If it’s sweets that make your psoriasis worse, avoid them. When you have psoriasis, you should pay attention to your diet and what things make the psoriasis worse (or better, for that matter) and should adjust your diet accordingly.

There are a lot of diets out there for psoriasis sufferers and many books written on the topic. They often blame junk food, coffee, tomatoes, wheat products and eggs, for example. They have a lot of theories about things that work for a psoriasis diet, such as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, found in cold water ocean-going fish like tuna and salmon, herbal teas and certain fruit juices. It’s not surprising that many of these books do not agree on what’s good and what’s bad for psoriasis because many are based on personal experience, which can be different from your personal experience regarding diet and psoriasis.

Still, if you find a reasonable psoriasis diet, it is worth trying one to see if it makes your psoriasis better. There may be things in the diet that soothe the irritation of the skin and, as long as the diet isn’t harmful to you, it shouldn’t be a bad thing to try. If it doesn’t work, try another diet to see what you think about it. Diets that eliminate alcohol are especially good to try as alcohol is a known trigger to worsening psoriasis. At the same time, be wary of any supplements that are made for psoriasis, with the possible exception of zinc and selenium, minerals that have some effectiveness against psoriasis.

One thing that might work is to try a reasonable psoriasis diet and then cheat on the diet so that you can see if the psoriasis flares. If it does, the diet is probably doing something for you and you should continue on the diet. Try eliminating suspicious foods and add them back, seeing what your psoriasis does after you start the food back again.

One aspect of the diet you may wish to consider trying is to get rid of wheat, barley and rye products that contain gluten. People with psoriasis can have anti-gliadin antibodies found in gluten and the antibodies make the psoriasis worse if you take in gluten-containing products. Keep such products out of your diet, including bread, pasta and other foods with gluten, and see what happens to your psoriasis. You can also ask your doctor to test you for anti-gliadin antibodies and then you’ll know what things to avoid in your diet.

While there’s no perfect dietary modification for psoriasis, pay attention to what you’re eating and see which things don’t do well with your psoriasis. You can create a psoriasis diet all your own.
